About READ

To read is to improve the quality of one’s life. Taking inspiration from this idea, READ works to improve the lives of impoverished and marginalised communities across rural Tamil Nadu.

Rooted in rural Tamil Nadu

Since 1994, working alongside families across Ariyalur, Perambalur and Cuddalore districts.

Empowering communities

Education, livelihoods, health and dignity — built with the community, not for it.

Who we are

Our vision & mission

Our Vision

To create a just society practicing democratic values of equity, participation, inclusion and self-reliance through education.

Our Mission

To empower the impoverished and marginalized sector of society by strengthening community-based organizations and instituting capacity-building measures.

Our story

Rooted in Andimadam since 1994

READ came into existence in 1994, started by Dr. READ Selvam, who grew up in Andimadam and was inspired to build an organisation that would help and empower the people of his community. It began as a voluntary organisation (registered under the Societies Registration Act 27 of 1975) by a group of committed social workers with a decade of experience in the field.

READ has since been registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA, revised 2020) by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India (Darpan TN/2009/0007774).

What drives us

Our objectives

  • Empower marginalised people towards an independent life through community mobilisation.
  • Promote gender consciousness and equity in society.
  • Empower people with disabilities to lead a dignified life through rehabilitation.
  • Provide care and support for those impacted by HIV/AIDS, including elderly and orphaned children.
  • Promote awareness and health care to prevent HIV/AIDS, disability and other diseases.
  • Protect the environment through bio-cultivation and sustainable management.
